“There's a lot of wonderful people who have gone through this building,” says Gavin Mitford, writer and director of “Carlton Chronicles.” “It's been a hub serving the larger community, and its effect on the suburb is something we want to celebrate.”

The musical brings to light the stories of Carlton's shops, fires, robberies, and secret meetings in the local hotel. It also highlights the first post office and the impact of the railway's arrival on the suburb's development. Notable figures like author Miles Franklin and Cardinal Sir Norman Gilroy, the first Australia-born Bishop of the Roman Catholic Church, are also featured, showcasing Carlton's contribution to literature and religion.
“It has been a wonderful experience finding these stories,” says Becki Tam, another writer on the team. “We are bringing them to light and creating a unique musical experience.”

“It's great to give meaning to the places we walk past every day,” adds Gavin. “Carlton may be a little suburb, but it has achieved so much, and its locals have represented it well at the highest levels.”
