Get ready for a major shake-up in Rocket City! The Trash Pandas are betting big on experience for their 2026 season, bringing in veteran coach Joe Kruzel to lead the charge. But here's where it gets interesting: Kruzel isn't just any manager—he's a seasoned pro with over three decades of coaching and player development under his belt, and he's got his sights set on transforming the Trash Pandas into a playoff powerhouse.
MADISON, Ala. — In a move that signals a new era for the Rocket City Trash Pandas, the team has named Joe Kruzel as their manager starting in 2026. This appointment makes Kruzel the third manager in the franchise’s history and brings a wealth of knowledge to the dugout. With more than 30 years in the game, Kruzel is no stranger to nurturing talent and building winning teams. His resume is impressive: he’s spent the last four seasons as the Los Angeles Angels’ field coordinator, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the organization’s minor league system. Now, he’s stepping back into the manager’s role, ready to make his mark in Huntsville.
But here’s the part most people miss: Kruzel’s approach goes beyond just winning games. He’s equally focused on player development, aiming to create an environment where athletes thrive both on and off the field. “I’m thrilled to be back in the dugout,” Kruzel shared. “My goal is to help players grow and prepare them to contribute in LA, while also building a winning culture in Rocket City. We’re not just here to play baseball—we’re here to play championship-caliber baseball, get the Trash Pandas back in the playoffs, and foster personal growth along the way.”
Kruzel’s track record speaks for itself. With nine seasons as a professional manager, including eight in affiliated baseball, he boasts a nearly even career record of 473-472. His most recent managerial stint was with Double-A Springfield in the St. Louis Cardinals organization in 2019, where he spent 13 seasons as both a manager and hitting coach. He was also set to manage Springfield in 2020 before the pandemic halted the season.
And this is where it gets controversial: Some might question whether Kruzel’s traditional coaching style will mesh with the modern, data-driven approach increasingly dominating the sport. But Kruzel’s success across multiple levels—from college baseball at the University of Toledo, where he earned Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year in 1999, to professional stints with the Cincinnati Reds and State College Spikes—suggests he knows how to adapt. His induction into the Toledo City Athletic League Hall of Fame and the Toledo Central Catholic High School Hall of Fame further cements his legacy.
The Trash Pandas’ managerial lineage began with Jay Bell in 2021, followed by Andy Schatzley, who led the team from 2022 to 2025 before moving on to the Los Angeles Angels as an infield coach. Now, with Kruzel at the helm, the question remains: Can he take the Trash Pandas to new heights? Only time will tell. But one thing’s for sure—this is a team to watch in 2026.
