Thomas White, a highly touted left-handed pitching prospect, has suffered a grade one strain in his right oblique, ruling him out of Spring Training games. This setback is particularly disappointing for the 21-year-old, who was a first-round pick by the Marlins in 2023 and has since become one of the best pitching prospects in the sport. White's injury occurred during his spring debut, where he struggled, surrendering two runs on two hits and a walk while striking out just one in his lone inning of work.
The injury is expected to keep White out of action for three to four weeks, according to manager Clayton McCullough. White's performance at Double-A in 2025 was impressive, with a 1.59 ERA in 45 1/3 innings of work across ten starts. However, his spring debut was hampered by the oblique strain, and he will now focus on rehabbing the issue. White's chances of making the Opening Day roster were already slim, given the presence of established pitchers like Sandy Alcantara, Eury Perez, Max Meyer, Braxton Garrett, and Chris Paddack.
Despite this setback, White has the potential to become a front-of-the-rotation arm for the Marlins. His performance at Triple-A last year was mixed, with a high strikeout rate but also a high walk rate. White will need to improve his control to break into the majors and fulfill his promise. Fellow top prospect Robby Snelling is also expected to join him in the Triple-A rotation, and both players are on the big league radar.
White's injury history and the checkered injury histories of other Marlins pitchers suggest that innings will be available for him once he's ready to take the next step into the majors. However, the team's offseason trades of Edward Cabrera and Ryan Weathers have cleared the deck for White and Snelling, and they will now have the opportunity to showcase their skills at the highest level.
