The proposed wind farm off the coast of Clare and Galway, featuring 30 towering turbines resembling the Eiffel Tower, has been scrapped. This decision comes after a high-profile objection from Tommy Tiernan, a renowned TV host and comedian, who led a group of 177 third parties in opposing the project. The €1.4 billion wind farm, known as the Sceirde Rocks project, was set to be constructed in the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 5km to 11.5km off the west coast of Galway, near Carna. However, the plan faced significant opposition due to concerns over the impact on the area's natural beauty and cultural significance. In a letter to the planning authorities, Tommy Tiernan expressed his objection, stating, 'I'm objecting to the proposed offshore wind farm near Carna, Connemara, County Galway on the grounds of desecration of that area of natural beauty.' He further emphasized the importance of preserving cultural ideals and protecting areas of natural beauty, suggesting that the project could be relocated to more suitable sites further offshore or inland. The project developer, Fuinneamh Sceirde Teoranta (FST), had already invested €31.7 million in project costs and incurred substantial planning documentation expenses. Despite these investments, FST formally withdrew its planning application, citing a change in ownership and a focus on a smaller portfolio of projects. As a result, FST forfeited the €35.4 million performance security bond and the substantial costs associated with the planning process. This decision highlights the challenges and controversies surrounding offshore wind farm projects, particularly in areas of cultural and environmental significance. It also underscores the importance of balancing renewable energy development with the preservation of natural and cultural heritage. The government's commitment to developing 5GW of offshore wind capacity remains, with projects in construction by 2030 and energization as soon as feasible thereafter. The first of these South Coast DMAP projects, the 900MW Tonn Nua site, was successfully auctioned, with a joint venture between ESB and Orsted confirmed as the winner. The department is now making arrangements to bring forward the remaining three sites within the South Coast DMAP, ensuring a consistent pipeline of offshore developments over the coming years.
